Commitment Spotlight: Alex Wilkins
The Massachusetts native committed to the Paladins in September
Alex Wilkins, another addition to Furman’s talented and exciting 2025 class committed to the Paladins in September after building a great relationship with the staff during his recruiting process. Assistant Coach Chad Warner made the first connection, and from then on Wilkins felt a strong connection. At 6’5, Alex primarily plays point guard when on the floor, but has the versatility to slide into the off-guard when needed. He has great size for the guard spot, which is something Coach Richey seems to be prioritizing in the 2025 cycle.
“My decision just came down to the coaching staff. I loved my connection with Coach Richey and Coach Warner and the rest of the guys. … On my visit, it really felt like home.”
Alex Wilkins to the New England Basketball Journal
Wilkins, a Boston native, plays for the Middlesex Magic on the AAU circuit and Brooks school during his high school season. During his junior season, Alex posted 18.5 points per game, shooting the ball at a 46% clip from the field. He is a serious threat from beyond the arc, converting on 39% of his threes a year ago. His ability to shoot the ball will be a welcome addition to a team that will be losing both PJay Smith and Nick Anderson to graduation. Wilkins could complement the inside out game of Furman’s bigs even in his freshman season.
With his length, Wilkins could be expected to get to the rim at a consistent rate, drawing fouls or finishing. In the process, he will be able to convert easy opportunities at the foul line, as he shot over 90% from the stripe last season. Check out some highlights via Filmdontliemixes on Youtube from his AAU season here:
Alex demonstrates his ability to finish at the rim from different angles, as well as handle the ball when it gets crowded in the paint. He defends his position well, utilizing his length on the perimeter. Alex is a great leader, who is always ready to contribute even if it’s not only from scoring. He’s always going to impact winning if his shot isn’t going in, with a good passing acumen from the lead guard spot.
Wilkins models his game after pros like Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Tyrese Halliburton, bigger guards who can not only score, but do the little things to help the team win. It will certainly be exciting to see how Alex Wilkins fits into the Furman culture, and he has the potential to be the next one in a line of great guards coached by Bob Richey.
